Do I Need a Home Inspection? - Real Estate Advice

Most home inspections today run between $300 to over $1000 and sometimes you don't really get your moneys worth. There are home inspection companies that guarantee, any problems that they miss will be repaired at their expense over a desired period of time, usually a year. It seems like, most home inspection companies are just inspecting the property and have no guarantees or liability from their inspection.

It's not a good idea to buy or sell a home without getting a home inspection from a licensed home inspector. This is like having a second opinion from someone who is usually skilled in the process. I would like to point something out to unsuspecting, potential home buyers and sellers. Sometimes a home inspection company will get a little behind in their work and need to hire other home inspectors if these home inspectors don't have any experience in the construction business or have never inspected a home before. In other words there fresh out of home inspector school. You might not get a good home inspection.

You can always ask the question, how long have you been in business?... How long have you been a home inspector?... have you ever worked in the construction business or have any skills in home building and remodeling. If the answers to these questions are satisfactory, it doesn't mean, that they're telling the truth and being sincere and could lead to problems later if they are lying to you.

Let me rephrase the question now, "Do I Need a Home Inspection" from an unqualified home inspector? Absolutely not. But how can you really tell the difference and is the report going to be worth the money that you paid for it.

What would you say, if I had the solution to your problem. How about a pre-home inspection, using a home buyers checklist? What if I could give you a check list with questions, that you could ask your home inspector? Some of these questions are not going to be part a regular inspection but should always be asked and make sure you get the answers to them, before purchasing the property.

Would you be interested now? What if I told you, for under $20, you could purchase a home buyers checklist, now for the tough question, this checklist could save you thousands of dollars and prevent you from purchasing a home with major construction problems or defects, and can be used on every house you look at.

Don't buy a home without purchasing a professional home inspection checklist. These lists of questions can save you some serious headaches and stress in the future.

Plywood Roof Sheeting - Roof Framing Trade Secrets

Most framing contractor's look at the building plans and order all of the material, according to those that are specified on the plans. This works out fine, and can often save you money, but rarely produces the best home that you could possibly frame.

As a professional framing contractor, I would like to share one of my house framing tips with you. Most plans require half-inch plywood or oriented strand board as their roof sheeting. This product is fine and if you're building a lot of homes, you're not going to have the choice. Ordering larger sized plywood could cost you thousands of dollars, especially if you're building a lot of homes.

However, if your framing or building a home for someone or even yourself, you might want to take my advice and think twice about it, before ordering the roof sheeting. Half-inch plywood, works okay for 16 inch on center roof rafters or engineered truss roofing systems. It doesn't work well on 24 inch on center roof rafters spacing.

It is usually flimsy and weak at the center point, directly in between the 24 inch roof rafter bays. If you're going to use the half-inch plywood, I would recommend using plywood clips that are relatively inexpensive and can be placed in the direct center of each roof rafter bay on each sheet of plywood. These can be purchased at most home improvement centers or lumber yards.

The other alternative, and this is what I recommend, would be to use 5/8 inch plywood. This plywood works great for 24 inch on center roof rafters and you will have a nice sturdy roof to walk on, while roofing your home.

I have actually seen people step through the flimsy plywood, while lifting heavy roof tiles and bundles of composition roof shingles. Experienced roofers try to walk directly on top of the roof rafters, when loading their roof shingles or even carrying them on the roof.

If you're a home builder and your concern is about making a profit, you will need to use the half-inch plywood. If you want to build a superior roof, use the 5/8 of an inch plywood.

Subfloor Damage From Poor Bathtub Installation - Read Bath Tub Fixture Manuals

You should never under estimate the amount of damage that water can do to your wood subfloor. Especially if this wood is underneath your bathtub. If the bathtub is not installed properly, you could find yourself replacing the wood underneath, within a short period of time. This repair is not uncommon and as more homeowners and handyman seemed to be doing projects like these, without the proper experience, it's becoming even more common.

I wish I had a solution to the problem, however, I don't. The best advice I could give anyone who is going to be involved in any home remodeling project, would be to get some books on what ever task you are about to undertake and read all of the information that you possibly can about the products you are going to be installing. This is extremely helpful for anyone who has never installed a bathtub or any bathtub fixtures.

If the product fails and was installed properly, the manufacturer should be responsible for the water damage. I have been reading the manufacturer's installation manuals for quite some time now and every once in a while, I find something that is of great value to me and I get to pass it on to my readers. That's what I'm doing right now.

Whether you want to remodel your bathroom to save money or you want to accomplish a task that you haven't done yet. I would recommend, taking the time to understand, exactly how the water flows off of and on to another section of the bath tub or shower on its way to the drain. Understanding the basics of bathroom remodeling can save you big money in the future.

Save yourself some money and make sure that you install your bathtubs properly. Taking a little time before you start to read the bath tub fixture manuals, can save you some money and grief in the future.

Five Things That a Termite Inspection Company Might Not Ever Say

I don't think that I've ever heard of a termite inspector, ever go to a home and not find any termites. Even if the home doesn't have any damage that is visible from the termites, it seems like it's always a good idea, to tent the home, just in case, for protection. Anyway, here's five things that you might not ever hear a termite inspector ever say.

1. Your house is free of termites. This means that there isn't, one termite on your property and the termite inspector isn't going to make any money. Let's face it, termite damage, whether it's visible or invisible, keeps these guys working.

2. Your house isn't going to fall down, if I don't do anything to stop the termites. I have seen homes, where termites have been working on them for quite some time and they still seem to stand up and function properly.

3. Termites don't eat much and I wouldn't worry about the damage. Most termite inspectors will tell you how much a termite in Hawaii or Africa will eat in a day, but doesn't seem to have an honest idea, how much damage they are doing to your home, if they can't actually see it.

4. Every one that works for our company, has at least 30 years experience, repairing any termite damage. Don't even get me started with this one.

5. We will replace all of the termite damage wood, back to its original condition. What they might say, is that they will replace the wood that is damaged by termites, that you can actually see.

There are plenty of great termite companies out there and this article was meant just to have fun with most of them. Termite damage can be a serious problem with some homes and I would suggest that you contact at least three termite inspectors, before proceeding ahead with any home repairs or use of chemicals.

Try not to forget, the only way that a termite inspection company will make any money, looking at your house, will be to find something wrong with it.

What If My Contractor Does Not Return My Call

This is one of the biggest problems in business today. You have some work done on your home in good faith that the contractor knows what he is doing. When all is said and done you have a problem that needs to be resolved as soon as possible. I really don't care how long it has been since the work was done. If you have a problem the least that your contractor can do is answer the telephone.

Some companies go out of business and others get to busy to respond to your problem. You will hear the old excuse "That's not my problem" or the ever popular " I didn't do that". I have been in business for over twenty years and had very few problems. Of course I built things to last as long as possible.

Keep in mind that some contractors are a one man operation and they might be on vacation. Some contractors do not answer their phones over the week ends or after business hours. So don't sink the ship to fast.

Do not call the Contractors Licensing Board or the Better Business Bureau unless it has been at least a few working days. I would give it at least a week or so. Oh yeah don't assume that the contractor got your message. Call a few times at the least.

It has always made me mad when I have to fix someone else's problems. I get the call when the other contractors won't respond. I listen to the home owner with regret for being in a business where I am considered a crook. This is one of the reasons why contractors in my business get out of it.

If you have the contractors address and they aren't responding by phone you can always send them a letter by certified mail. Request a return receipt. That's your proof that the company received your letter. Keep a copy for your files.

The good news for a home owner when a contractor will not respond to your calling them is the Department of Consumer Affairs. Most states have a complaint department of some sort that will listen to your complaints. Does this mean it will get resolved? NO there are no guarantees here.

If your state has a licensing board for contractors, this will be your next step.

This will get your contractors attention and there is a great chance they will respond now. If there are enough complaints against the contractor and they do nothing about them the contractors board will take their license away.

If your contractor does not respond after all of this. There is very little you can do about it. Hire someone to fix the problem and look at it as a very important lesson learned.

If your state doesn't have a contractors licensing board contact the Better Business Bureau or your local government for their recommendation. Ask some of your friends if they have had any problems like this and how they handled them.

Plumbing Problems and Solutions - Repair Manuals

If you've owned a home for over 20 years, there's a very good chance, that you've had a water pipe break, a drainpipe clogged, a toilet that wouldn't flush right, or a water leak that damaged part of the home. If you don't know, what you're looking for and you have no idea what damage can be done, over time, this could mean trouble for the homeowner.

Plumbing problems like these have been around and will be around for many years. Knowing what to do about them, how to repair them and what materials will be needed, can be found in plumbing repair manuals for books. How would you like to have a professional plumber to advise you on your plumbing repairs. What if I told you that you could have a plumbing professional on hand at all times. Is this something that you might be interested in.

Well I can't guarantee that, so let's forget about what I just said and go to the next best thing. Plumbing repair manuals are full of tips and advice that when needed can sometimes be priceless. If water is leaking from the ceiling in your home and you have no idea, where the water is coming from or how to stop it from leaking, any information could be priceless and I mean priceless.

Plumbers, usually charge over $100 an hour for emergency service. I've seen plumbers come to peoples homes, turn the water off to the house, stop the water from leaking and now it is no longer an emergency. The plumber quickly pulls out an invoice for the plumbing repairs and it could be over $1000, if you decide that this is ridiculous and choose not to pay it, the plumber can hand you a bill for stopping the water leak. Some of these bills are what I would consider quite ridiculous, for just shutting the water off.

You're not paying the plumber for the amount of time it took him, you're paying him for his knowledge. If you knew where to shut the water off, you wouldn't have an emergency situation and could contact a plumber during normal hours. This could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

With a simple home repair manual or a home plumbing book, you could prepare yourself for a situation like this and other plumbing problems. Most home repair manuals have general solutions and advice and can solve most of the problems around your home. If they can't solve all of the problems, they can probably save you from major catastrophes like a water leak.

Most of the time it's not the water leak that will cost the most money, it's the damage the water will do to your furniture, carpeting, wood flooring, walls or ceilings. A little information and preparation can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Basic Home Electrical Wiring - For the Do it Yourself Home Electrician

The Green Bay Packers were one of the most successful football teams and Vince Lombardi said something to them that I will never forget," This is a football." All the football players laughed and he said that we're going to start with the basics and that's what I'm going to do, with this article.

Let's start with our electrical wire, the two most common electrical wire sizes, that will be used in most homes, will be 14 and 12 gauge electrical wire. Let's clear something up, right off the bat, the smaller the number, the larger the wire. In other words a 12 gauge electrical wire is a little bit larger and will carry more electricity, for longer distances than a 14 gauge wire.

What about electrical outlet plugs? These plugs are usually the same, except for the fact that they come in different colors. When I said that most electrical plugs are the same, I'm talking about your standard wall outlet plug. There are different electrical plugs that will be used for air conditioners and some kitchen appliances like 220 Volt electric stoves and ovens.

What about your home's light switches? Your standard two way light switch will usually turn a one light on or a group of lights on, from one location. A three way light switch will usually turn one light on or a group of lights on from two different locations. A four way light switch, will usually turn one light or a group of lights on from three different locations.

It doesn't get any more basic than that. I hope this gives you a better understanding about your home's electrical system.

Tile Grouting Tips For Your Bathrooms, Kitchens and Floors

Isn't tile grouting supposed to be simple, if you read the directions and watch a couple of videos? What could make tile grouting so difficult? Grouting your tile isn't that difficult, by the time you're done reading this article, you should have a pretty good idea how to grout your floors, bathrooms, kitchens and anything else that requires tile.

I used to have problems grouting tile, but after I read the directions, I became a grouting wizard. This sounds hard to believe, but after reading the directions on the tile grout bag, I became a grout master. I know, you the type of person who never read the directions, you simply add water, mix and start grouting.

It's time to change your thinking about, whether or not the directions will be helpful. Whether it's about grouting your bathroom floor or putting together your home barbecued. I read one thing on the grout bag and it changed my entire grouting career.

The grout should slake. After you're done mixing the grout, you should wait between five and 10 minutes to let the moisture soak into the grout mix. Do this once, and you will never go back to mixing your grout and applying it, as quickly as possible after it has been mixed.

For more information on grouting, remodeling or home repairs, I would recommend reading books on home improvement and home repairs. Some of these books can make a big difference in your home improvement abilities as a handyman. I would also recommend reading more articles, there's plenty of information about tile and grouting, all over the Internet.

Important Do-It-Yourself Home Remodeling Advice

Often I'm asked by homeowners, if they think that they can build something on their own. Often I end up explaining the process to them and it's pretty confusing. I would like to give some homeowners and construction handyman some do-it-yourself home remodeling advice, about projects that I think they should avoid and the reason why.

1. Working on Electrical Service Boxes

I really don't recommend, anyone who lacks experience working with electrical, to be working on it at all. When it comes to the electrical service box repairs, if you don't have any experience working in this specific area, I am suggesting this to all homeowners and do-it-yourselfers, stay away from electrical service power boxes. Electricity can be extremely hazardous to your health, so take my advice, this is coming from an expert on the subject.

2. Plumbing Water Supply Lines

I don't recommend, anyone who doesn't have any experience working with plumbing water supply lines, because if they break, or if your repair, doesn't hold properly, you could destroy a large portion of your home. Picture this, you just got through putting a new faucet in, everything looks great, but it's time for you to go to your baseball game. You come home about four hours later and the entire house is flooded with water.

This kind of stuff does happen and you need to take the advice of an expert here. It has even happened to me and I understand the process, pretty good. If you plan on fixing any plumbing water supply lines, make sure that you can spend the time, keeping an eye on your new home repair. If you're going to have any problems with them, they will usually happen within the first few hours of use.

I hope this helps, sometimes it's better to pay a professional, but I can understand, every intelligent person, is interested in saving a few dollars and learning new skills.

How to Protect Foundation Plumbing Pipes?

If you install any underground plumbing pipes, in your concrete building foundation, you will need to protect them, from the concrete. You can use a variety of products and the most common of them will be a Styrofoam wrapping that can be purchased at most plumbing supply stores.

Let's start with the waste pipes, that are made out of plastic. The concrete could actually start to put pressure on the plastic pipes as the concrete starts to expand and this pressure could actually damage your new waste pipes.

You don't need to wrap all of the plastic waste pipes, only the parts of the waste pipes that will be exposed or in direct contact any concrete, but you do need to protect every copper water supply line that will be buried under the ground or exposed to the concrete, with a plastic sleeve. These products can be purchased again at most building supply or plumbing supply stores.

If these pipes aren't protected properly, you could find yourself within a short time, repairing the pipes that are either inside of your concrete foundation or buried underneath your concrete foundation. Either way, this isn't going to be a good thing.

You definitely need to wrap a plastic sleeve around the water supply pipes that are going to be buried or in direct contact with the concrete. This is a must and most building departments will require your plumbing pipes to be wrapped, before it they will sign off on your rough foundation plumbing inspection.

However, for the waste pipes, you can actually use cardboard to protect them. If you're short on funds, why not grab some cardboard boxes, dismantle them and start using cardboard to wrap the pipes, with a little duct tape.

There are plenty of ways to save money in the construction business, buy a few books, read a couple of articles, with a lot of pictures in this can provide you with lots of construction information, from experience building contractors.

A Conservatory and How to Enhance Your Home's Value

A conservatory can be an extended living space for the home, but it can also be an often used area in the summer. The real problem is that when you install a conservatory, the space for your lawns or garden becomes constricted. This may be a case of compromise much like living in a glass room to enjoy beauty of nature in summer.

Some important factors, which are to be kept in mind while setting up conservatories, are direction in which it faces sunlight. For example, conservatories that face north fall short of getting ample sunlight. The extra heat accumulated also effects household items present in rooms like furniture and may lead to extra cost replacing them. Some of the mechanisms to get cooling effect in conservatories are tapestries and Conservatory blinds.

Nowadays, there are many offline dealers and online websites, which can supply or can even install conservatories. They make the supplied conservatory a perfect extension of your home. However, you can opt to make your conservatory in your own unique way. These are popularly known as DIY projects that you can enjoy in your spare time. This will give you an opportunity to experience the thrill of constructing your own conservatories and can help you save some money in these tight economic times.

Conservatories are also available in ready to use format where you just need small alignment adjustments to get it done. If you are thinking to assemble your own conservatory then keep the following, things in mind so avoid any further issues:-

1) If there are manholes in path of your proposed conservatory fill it up completely with a cover that is sealed tight

2) To amass rainwater by the wall, some conservatories like Edwardian or Victorian come with a roof that is boxed in

3) Height restriction should be assessed carefully, through hipped-back or low-pitched modulations

A conservatory provides you with extra yards of covered spaces where you can relax and spend some time. You can entertain your guests or visitors and it acts as great place to relax during summer days. Take care to include right furniture, right blinds and right utility objects to enjoy these to maximum.

On a monetary aspect, a conservatory can add a great value to a house. On average, this can give up to 11000 pounds for owners in UK. Another good aspect is that a conservatory seldom changes a home's structure. This is something aside but an integral part of a home.

Vince Samios writes about Conservatory Furniture, including Cane Conservatory Furniture, Wicker Conservatory Furniture, and Rattan Conservatory Furniture.

Great Books for Home Building

If you're a do it yourself or or a homeowner who every once in a while, once to tackle a small or large project but doesn't know where to begin, can gather useful information from home building books. I have been using these books for years and may have been worth their weight in gold.

I started my career working for my father and my father worked for his father as a Carpenter. Our job was to frame the house and we built a Lotta homes. I learned how to frame and developed some great carpentry skills from my father and working with other skilled carpenters. Over the years, if you're paying attention, even a monkey can figure out, how to assemble almost anything.

The only problem that I faced, was learning how to build the rest of the home. I would often ask questions to other building trades like plumbers, electricians, roofers and construction superintendents. Some of these people were helpful and others were not. When I was in my early 30s, I purchased my first book on home building. This book lead to other books and soon I found myself with more home building knowledge that my father.

I had about 50 books on home building and soon found myself doing large home remodels, with no formal education. I would attribute almost everything that I learned outside of house framing to books. These books have proven invaluable to me over the years and with a relatively small investment. I couldn't have spent over $200 purchasing these books but have used the knowledge from them to save myself thousands of dollars.

One $20 home building books or home repairs, can save you lots of money, if you're willing to do a little research and the labor to complete almost any home building project.

By the way, if you're interested in learning how to repair a roof, build your own house, interior decorating, structural engineering, building a deck, gathering some more information about home painting or even remodeling your bathroom. An online home building bookstore can save you money if you're willing to do the work.

Protect Your Lumber Inventory With Cantilever Racking

Precision inventory control and product protection are two things that are vital to recession proofing any business involved in the distribution of lumber or the manufacture of wooden products like furniture. Cantilever lumber racks offer a very low-cost means to accomplishing both, and they can support up to several thousand pounds in weight.

These systems are best custom built, because the capacity and size of a cantilever lumber rack will be determined by product length, type of lumber cut, and the total weight capacity supported by the arms. Precise calculations have to be made to ensure evenly distributed loading, uneven loads will reduce the total capacity of the rack by 50 percent.

Cantilever lumber racks are intended to organize and protect cuts of lumber by keeping them off the floor and providing an efficient method of categorizing various dimensions and types of wood. Cantilever lumber racks can be built with single or double-sided towers. If base assemblies are stackable, it allows towers to be joined together to create entire rows of storage.

This is an extremely efficient method of space management in crowded warehouses. Cantilever lumber racks take up much less space than pallet racks, and so long as they are anchored properly to the concrete floor and built with appropriately proportioned columns, arms, and braces, they can be built very tall so as to minimize their consumption of horizontal floor space and make it easier for forklifts to access their contents.

Cantilever racks are vital to the lumber industry. Almost all cuts of timber feature a variety of lengths, widths, and thicknesses. Organizing these cuts by sheer dimensions alone is difficult enough. When you consider the added difficulty in categorizing lumber by wood type, it quickly becomes evident how difficulty inventory control without a system of organization and a convenient method of retrieval.

Wood is also very vulnerable to impact and moisture and requires some special storage considerations. Even indoors in very hot, humid climates, warehouses can be too humid for the long-term storage of lumber, and leaving boards, planks, and sheets on the floor invites damage, mold, and safety concerns. Cantilever lumber racks both elevate and separate lumber by size and type, placing it closer to fans or other forms of ventilation, or making it possible to cover the lumber with plastic or tarpaulins in order to prevent it from becoming damp.

The most common type of cantilever rack that is used to store lumber is the structural rack. Structural cantilever racking is used for more heavy-duty applications such as lumber and pipe storage. Structural components generally include structural columns and bases, roll-formed arms, horizontal bracings, X-Bracings, and hardware used to mount the units.

X-braces can be either 48 inches or 60 inches wide. Columns, as we have already mentioned, can be either single-sided or double-sided. Many lumber yards prefer to use double-sided cantilever lumber racks because this allows them to create rows for forklifts to move through. It also makes better use of space to build this type of system if there is sufficient area in which to do so.

Build Awesome Self Confidence

Are you lacking the self confidence that it takes to build a successful business? Do you feel frustrated, limited and like you are being left behind? Do you know that you were likely pre-programmed to fail in life even before you were old enough to read? All of this "programming" is buried deep in your subconscious mind. If you would like to know how you can "deprogram" yourself for failure and set yourself on the track of success kindly read on.

Most people who lack confidence or self confidence find themselves engaging many avoidant behaviors such as procrastination, self distraction, addictions of various sorts, over planning, and plain self sabotage. They often also feel inadequate, indecisive, anxious, tend to obsess over little things when having to make a decision, unmotivated, small, weak, vulnerable, and also lack self esteem and self worth to name a few. These feelings and behaviors are driven by deep seated negative beliefs they have about themselves and that are rooted in early negative memories.

Beliefs such as:

1. I am not deserving of success.
2. I am not good enough.
3. I don't have what it takes.
4. If I succeed I will be taking away someone else's success.
5. I am bad.
6. I am useless.

And so on.

As I said such beliefs are rooted in early negative memories. What is not so well known is that in spite of many professional coaches promoting the idea of changing one's belief systems in order to succeed such an approach takes work and is inherently self limited in what it can achieve.

The reason for this is that although you may be consciously trying to "install" an new belief the old negative one will always be there acting more powerfully at the subconscious level. What's more the meaning of "subconscious" implies that you are not aware of its presence or when it is going to strike and undermine you.

So how empowered does that make you feel? Hardly at all, I'm sure.

In my experience helping individuals become truly empowered and thus create true and solid self confidence I have learned that one must release the root of the problem. That root lies at the subconscious level. The process that effects this out of necessity must permanently extract or erase the negative beliefs and the memories that generate them.

If All You Have is a Hammer Everything Starts to Look Like a Nail

We were watching the film Mulholland Drive yesterday and it suddenly hit us like a bolt of lightening. How many times we misdiagnose a situation. How many times we carry on a path not knowing that our assumption have taken us miles off course.

Its like playing golf and only knowing how to use three clubs and having to use them in every situation.

Its like looking through a camera zoom lens instead of a wide angle.

Its like blindly following anothers opinion.

The fact is that most of our lives are spent reusing the information collected in our formative years. Thus, when anything new enters our arena we immediately go to the past to try to make sense of it.

The outcome is: we each live an illusion. We each see our world through some really heavily tinted spectacles. We each act as though we are a hammer and everything that comes in front of us is a nail.

The problem is. IT DOESNT WORK.

We were amazed how easily we fell into the trap. How easily we interpreted what was happening before our eyes and made it logical. How easily we searched for closure.

To make us comfortable we wanted to put things into a comfortable category. We wanted to place happenings in a box in the same way a librarian codes books for easy access. Ah! That goes in the family box. That is rude behaviour. That is unacceptable in public. That shows he is uneducated etc etc etc

Yes, you could argue that this form of coding is important in life because it helps us get through life quickly.
BUT!!!
Why do we like to put ourselves and others into psychological boxes? What is it about us that we like to say we are this type of person or that? Why do we want to limit ourselves? Why do we want to sell ourselves short?

Its like being a carpenter who only has a hammer in his toolbox. We are restricting ourselves beyond belief. Just imagine how restricting it would be if you only had a hammer in your toolbox? How can you get passionate about anything if all you are capable of is knocking the brains out of any information that comes your way?

How do you find out what you were brought onto this planet to do if all you can do is respond in the same way to whatever is put in front of you.

How do you develop and grow your children if all they see is the same behaviour irrespective of the problem posed.

How do you rise to the challenges of our society if all you do is apply the same reasoning even though it doesnt fit?

As Howard Schatz. The famous New York dance photographer stated in one of his books:

I told each dancer that when it was easy, it had probably been done
before, probably many times. I explained that only when it was so hard
that it was nearly impossible were we perhaps close to getting something
unique and extraordinary.

Is this why we like to categorise situations and people? We actually dont like hard work.

Is it that we dont like the pressure of being our true selves? Because to do that we have to stand out?

Is it that we cant cope with being unique and extraordinary, so we just want to be similar and ordinary?

Is it that we are afraid of who we might be? Are we afraid that we can be successful? Afraid that if we admit to ourselves that we have talent we might have to do something with our lives?

Is it that we dont really want to find out who we really are and what we are capable of?

We dont know about you but we want to be unique, we want to find out and use our uniqueness. We want to be fulfilled. We want to find our energy source that is released when we are doing what we are intended to do. We want to be in the flow, as some writers describe it.

We have come to realise that what stops us from being in the flow all the time. What stops us from releasing our passion. What stops us from behaving naturally. What makes us waste energy.

FEAR.

Fear keeps us placing people and situations into categories.

Fear stops us from leading ourselves.

Fear stops us from letting go of the past.

Fear keeps our habitual patterns in place.

Being frightened and feeling second best stop us from finding our true selves.

Fear buries the natural me.

A musician must make music, and artists must paint,
a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself.
What a man can be, he must be
(Maslow)

What about you?

Good Luck

Home Automation Tips

Warning: Remember that electricity is very dangerous and will kill you in a heartbeat. Electricity can also start fires very easily, and fires can also kill you. The best way to get your home wired is by a certified professional who knows your local codes.

We have now a plan and we need to look at the design piece of our new Home Automation. The first step is to do an assessment by answering several questions:

  • Wiring and Networking:
    • What is the house status? (being built, being remodeled, old construction, new construction)

    • The status will affect greatly the type of wiring we will select. We had a complete home remodeling and all the walls were open. We had the opportunity to install 1" orange cable tubing in every room, this allow pulling any type of cables within minutes. We have Cat6 cable, Fiber Optics, TV and audio/video cables.

    • Existing construction may not offer the same flexibility and going wireless will become the solution.

    • In old construction the quality of the power line is not high quality and will definitively impact transmission such as X10. Ask a certified electrical professional to help evaluating your existing wiring to make sure it's still meets 'code'. Don't be afraid to spend money on your electrical wiring, it will pay back later.

    • For this project we will choose an existing old construction with up to local code wiring. The network will be wireless as well as security and monitoring. Z-Wave being too expensive, Home Automation will be based on Insteon and/or UPB equipment.

  • Lighting
    • Planning for this section is quite easy and interesting. We need to select for each room the type of switches we need and as we will implement security, monitoring and multimedia distribution we will use a control unit to manage all functions.
    • Control Units - we recommend 2 different brands Cortexa Technology and HAI. The Cortexa is more IP network based while HAI is more versatile on the security part. For this project I would use HAI which offer two main lines: Lumina and Omni. The Lumina is more limited on the security side but it connects to existing security systems. The Omni offers a complete solution from lighting to security and fire system. The Omni IIe Pro will be my choice as it has the most features and won't limit our future ideas.
    • Based on this control unit selection, the technology we will use UPB for lighting control. The cheaper X10 won't work very well in an old electrical wiring environment.
    • Now let look at the need for each room to replace existing switches.
      • Bedrooms - one switch and one or 2 side lamps
The switch can be dimmer or non-dimmer, side lamps will need lamp modules dimmer or non-dimmer as well.
      • Dining and Living rooms - one switch per room and may be some floor and table lamps with the same dimming status as for bedrooms.
      • Play room - two high wattage switches and may be several floor and table lamps.
      • Family room - three high wattage dimmer switches, several floor and table lamps and why not adding a nice LCD control panel to create lighting scenes.
      • ...etc for each rooms including bathrooms
      • Outdoor lights - replace existing switches with non dimmer high wattage ones plus two or three non-dimmers modules for Xmas lights as well.

    • We have a list of material to purchase - but don't buy anything yet!

  • Heating and cooling
    • To plan this section we will base it on a 3 zones heating and cooling system. One for the main floor, one for the second floor and one for the basement.
    • First we need to verify with a certified professional that the current heating cooling system can support multi-zoning and that the house and the furnace don't need too much modification.
    • For this project all is needed is 6 motorized dampers, a 4 zone control panel for the furnace and 3 RC-90B thermostat as the furnace is a single stage. We can upgrade to RC-2000 with humidity control.
    • Thermostats will need to be connected to the furnace control panel and to the HIA control unit. Some wiring to add here.
    • The RC-90 and RC-2000 accept external temperature sensors. These sensors installed in bedroom will allow to adapt the floor temperature to the lowest or most important room - Master bedroom or baby's room for example - additional wiring will be required to these rooms.

Renovations That Give the Best Return on Investment

Renovations are excellent means of not only enhancing your quality of living but also boosting the project's return on investment by the time you decide to resell your New York home. Through these projects, you are recreating areas in your home to bring out the most welcoming, appealing, and functional results.

Your renovation project does not have to cost you an arm and a leg to yield success. An expensive project does not necessarily mean more payback. The key to make the most out of your allotted budget is spending it wisely. Whether you have a limited or sky-is-the-limit budget that can accommodate from surface-level to full-scale renovation, the most crucial factor to focus on are implementing designs that last as well as selecting quality products.

To appraise the value and get the most out of your hard-earned money, note that not all renovations are created equal. To maximize the benefits you will get out of the project, consider any of the smartest ideas to bring back the best return on investment.

The Kitchen

Since the kitchen is the most frequented area in any home with most of the waking hours of every family member spent here, kitchen renovation would surely create a great impact and difference. Considered as the heart of a home, most buyers tend to visit this area first to make sure that it does not only look and feel good but would efficiently accommodate every essential purpose.

The Bathroom

Stress is a common denominator that links most human beings today. What better way to soothe stress away than a luxuriating time to start as well as end the day? A beautiful and efficient bathroom renovation would surely make any homeowner anticipate the coming of each day, no matter how hectic it can be. A trend that is increasingly becoming very popular is creating a spa-like environment in your very own bathroom. A bathroom turned into your personal, everyday spa would surely be irresistible.

For larger homes, additional baths would also make up for extra appeal. For space estimate as well as deciding the new bath location, it is best to consult with your contractor.

Exterior Renovation

As the popular and proven clich goes, First impressions last. Renovating the surrounding grounds of your home through landscaping would give its curb appeal a great boost. A low maintenance garden with some attractive fountain fixtures could work well in creating an ambiance. And for a major facelift for less of the cost, have your walls repainted and new sidings installed.

An important key to the success of your renovation project and the eventual achievement of the anticipated return on investment, is hiring a qualified remodeling contractor. Quality is an important consideration that the buyer will critically be looking into. So if you are not a contractor yourself, the renovations are best done by skilled and experienced professionals.

Another thing to keep in mind is that modern buyers find home features that require less maintenance more attractive. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, you can have this removed and refinish the existing hardwood flooring. Swimming pools are also among the least appealing with the tedious and regular cleaning and maintenance it requires.

Using Table Lamps

Table lamps are interesting home accessories. They light up your home nicely, and look good too. These days, there are plenty of ways to light up your house, but table lamps remain among the most popular picks.

Table lamps come in useful if you are a night owl, but you can use them just to decorate a room as well. True to the name, they look best on tables. From their humble origins, table lamps have come a long way. Some come with a range of fixtures, which are usually decorative, but may be functional as well. These lights are built strongly, and you can adjust the position to create the light effects you want.

Table lamps are obviously designed to be placed on table tops. The commonest use for these lamps is reading. But people have devised ways to use them as artifacts and home dcor items. Today, you will find table lamps in a vast range of sizes and shapes, from the ultra modern sleek styles to the more conventional ones with fabric shades. Some table lamps come in metal, glass or even wood.

Choosing a great table lamp is not that easy. The design is important, but you also need to take other factors into account. Measurements are crucial. The lamp should not be the height such that it casts a shadow on your reading matter when you sit next to it. The size should be in harmony with the rest of your furniture. The same goes for the color.

So-called modern table lamps include the light chrome lamps, crystal chandelier lamps and simple glassy types. These are each ideal for different types of home dcor. Select a color that you are comfortable using- there is really no point going in for the sexy oranges or bright reds if they don't match your tastes. You could go for a softer red instead, or rust, or a subtle pink. These are trendy too! In fact, modern table lamps are truly affordable, and you can go for a new one every couple of years, and create a new look for your home. However, there are designer pieces, collector items that are really high priced.

It may sound surprising, but some cheap table lamps have a LED touch mechanism that changes color every time you click a button. There are lovely bouquet shaped lamps with each floret concealing a candle bulb. There are lamps in animal shapes and pure retro lava lamps. When you are out shopping for one, we bet you'll be spoiled for choice.

Table lamps are generally fitted on short stands and covered with designer lampshades. You get stands in wood, wrought iron, glass, cane, bamboo and for the more adventurous, metal. The lampshades may be made up of silk, glass, cloth or paper. Each piece is decorated innovatively, with glass pieces, miniature painting, beads, shells, appliqu work, embroidery or sequins and the like.

Ready to give a touch of elegance to your home? It's time for you to pick up an exquisite table lamp that would make a positive difference to your home dcor.

Natural and Commercial Cleaning Supplies

When it comes to cleaning, commercial cleaning supplies often get the boot in cleaning books. Comparably, the difference between using commercial and natural cleaning solutions is the time and effort required to scrub, having a clean green feeling, and the safety of our health. Natural cleaning may not be preferable for everyone, but it's good to know the differences between natural and commercial cleaning products.

Going natural will often require having to apply a cleaner, waiting a period of time to let it soak in, scrubbing, and then repeating the process until the job is done. Many commercial cleaners don't always require these extended periods of time, or if they do they don't require as much scrubbing as may be required if you were to use natural cleaning solutions. Going natural often requires that you spend time making pastes and solutions to tackle your cleaning chores.

The benefit of natural cleaning products is that you can often buy large quantities of them, like Vinegar for example, at a relatively low cost that will last you for months. Most commercial cleaners may not last as long, the cost may be more expensive, and there are side-effects and potential health hazards they can create. With natural cleaning supplies you will not have to worry about health hazards or side-effects when using your cleaners. It should be acknowledged though that just because a product may be natural does not in any way mean that it is a gentle cleaning solution. By this, I mean that a natural cleaning solution may guarantee better health, but it may not guarantee the complete safety of certain household possessions. In the ways you can cause damage to your fabrics with commercial cleaning supplies, you can do the same with natural ones as well; lemon for example can fade fabric, hydrogen peroxide can cause unwanted lightening to carpet if used to remove a stain, and salt can rust metal and create permanent damp patches. So it's always advised to be careful when using any cleaning solution, period.

Now, going Green may be the most beneficial route to take if commercial cleaners cause problems for you. Many people find undesirable side effects to their health when using commercial cleaning products. Allergic reactions, headaches, and respiratory problems are all common side-effects for some people when using commercial cleaning products. Ammonia and sodium hypochlorite for example, can irritate the lungs and cause respiratory problems. Products with heavy amounts of these chemicals are not recommended for people with heart conditions or chronic respiratory problems. Some cleaning products contain parabens as preservatives, which has been linked with cancer. There are numerous problems associated with commercial cleaning products such as air pollution, water pollution, environmental and health hazards.

For Environmentalists the main concern here is the damage that chemical cleaning agents pose to our planet. Tons of different cleaning products with hazardous chemicals are being released every year and pose more of a threat to our environment. Scientists are continually finding that many chemicals have potential cancer risks. The products you may be using in your home today may indeed be posing dangers to not only your health but your families and the environments as well. This is often one of the main reasons that natural cleaning products are preferred over commercial ones.

Overall, natural and commercial cleaning products have their pros and cons. Depending on your preference, your personal situation, and the time you can dedicate to house cleaning, natural cleaning solutions may or may not be the best route for you. On the contrary, if you prefer natural over commercial and have the time to put into making your own solutions, then you will be able to enjoy the benefits that natural cleaning has to offer you and your family.

Build Your Own Generator From Scratch

There is no better feeling in the world than becoming 100% energy independent, especially if you've set up your home energy system by yourself from scratch. It's definitely worth making a choice to convert now, as electricity prices and dependence is only going upwards. This article gives you an overview home made electricity, and how to start to build your own generator from materials available at your local hardware store.

First things first, you need to understand just how much better life can be after converting to self generated power. You won't be affected my fluctuations in the energy market, you won't be affected by blackouts during storms, you won't have to pay energy bills (or at least they'll be significantly reduced), and best of all, if you build your own system, you won't have to fork out thousands for installation!

In my experience, the best 2 systems are solar and wind generators. Depending on the climate where you live, you can focus mainly on one of these systems, or both. I'd recommend both. Despite what you might be lead to believe, building and installing one or more of these babies is relatively simple if you've got the motivation, and/or some good help.

Projects can naturally start small, but grow quickly. After one weekend you can realistically expect to be running one household appliance off a solar panel that costs less than US$200 to build. That means that you can be saving money and emissions in only one weekend! You can save even more money faster if you get the help of a friend.

Like all Do-It-Yourself projects, you want to make sure that you have the best blueprints and advice. You can buy appropriate books and material at your local hardware store, or even easier yet (and cheaper), you can get a full home energy blueprint from the internet, instantly. These packages often come with all the knowledge and schematics on how to build a generator, and also constant updates on new technologies. This makes it even better value.

To see the best way to set up a free energy generator in your home, go to this Renewable Energy Systems website now for more information about how to build your own generator

The Pure Water Benefits Of A Water Filter

Water is the main element in our body which we need to survive. Doctors recommend eight glasses of water a day, at least sixty-four fluid ounces. Our blood contains 83% water, the brain 74%, the liver 90% and our muscles around 75%, which makes water a must in our routine diet. The tough part is that the water we get at our taps is not as clear as we think it is and often carries bacterium along with diseases that can cause severe illnesses therefore installation of water filters is a necessity.

Clean Water Available Every Day All The Time

One of the biggest benefis of water filters would be the ability to drink uncontaminated water any time of the day or night without having to prepare or acquire long procedures to get it such as, boiling or buying it in a multitude of bottle sizes. There are water filter types for just about any use in your home from tap substitution water filters, to the shower heads and refrigerators; they all are extremely beneficial and provide a cleaner, fitter way of life for you and your family.

Inexpensive And Extremely Effective

If you dont want to make the investment by installing water filters for your whole house, you can get the substitute water filters that can be situated on any tap you want when you need it; in fact they are best left on kitchen taps where you need drinking and preparation water all the time but remember to turn it off when washing dishes or when in use for other purposes other then drinking.

Water Filters For A Better Skin

While the first thing that comes to mind when we think about water is using it for drinking purposes, water is ill-used for cleansing ourselves as well and it can be very damaging to the skin when contaminated by causing dry, cracked and an itching sensation to the skin. You can find water filters for your shower as well and assure that your skin receives uncontaminated water from the outside as well as from the inside; you will also sustain a great change in your hair as you do away with the severity of the water and the bacterium found in it.

Helpful Water Filter Tips

Help yourself, your family and the environment by filtering the water you use from drinking and cleaning; even your appliances will last longer especially the washing machine, dish washer and coffee maker when you use water that is free of bacterium and other grating substances.

You can find more information by browsing through our other articles about water filters.

A Rheem Gas Furnace is Quite the Addition to Any House

With science and technology advancing ever forward, there are all kinds of new ways to look at heating systems for your household. A good residential furnace should last about twenty years, on the average. This can also be expected of the Rheem gas furnace. If you are needing to replace an old unit, it would be a good idea to do so as soon as possible. With the cost of fuel being so high and winter months nearly upon us, it is best to do the replacement now and benefit from the cost savings.

Traditionally, my homes have used oil furnaces for heating. For whatever reasons, I never felt comfortably warm. Wood stoves have been the only heating source that have kept me warm during the long New England months. However, I am now in my 50's and wood heat is extremely high maintenance and no longer as practical. I decided to have a Rheem gas furnace installed in my home for this winter. Though it is only late October as I write this, we have already experienced several nights of frost, hurricane winds and 2 inches of snow. It can be bitter cold out there and I want to stay warm. So far, my new furnace is doing the job. I'll be keeping a running journal of my experiences with this system throughout this first winter. Because I keep fuel receipts for several years, I'll be able to do a cost comparison for myself.

For those of you who are thinking about making a switch to a Rheem gas furnace, you should be prepared for the process of installation. With my old oil furnace, hot water piping was used to heat my house. I didn't have a duct system in place. Because I am also thinking about a cooling system for the summer months, some greater adaptations were required. No matter how well prepared one is for construction, it's always unsettling to have holes cut in the floors of your house. Also, there is all kinds of wood dust as a result of this work. One thing I would urge, is that you discuss clean-up with the Rheem dealership. It may be that they will take the extra time to clean behind themselves, especially if they know how important this is to you.

Simon Harris writes about the Rheem Gas Furnace at http://www.gasfurnacereview.com

Is it Worth the Cost to Make a Home More Energy-Efficient?

Making a home more energy-efficient will be worth the investment, especially over time. Not only will you be doing your part for the environment, you could save hundreds, even thousands of dollars on utility bills over the years you stay in your home. And, an energy-efficient home is much easier to sell when the time comes.

You might not want to just launch an effort to make your home more energy-efficient in one fell swoop, but as you make repairs, do upgrades and maybe do a little remodeling, the small additional costs will be recouped faster than you might expect. After all, some of the things you can do to make your home more energy efficient dont cost much at all, especially if you are upgrading anyway.

For example, adding weather stripping to doors and windows will probably cost you less than $50. You could save more than that in the next year in reduced energy bills because your home is losing less heated or cooled air. Installing window film on your east- and west-facing windows will probably cost you less than $100 if you do it and less than $250 if you have a professional do the job. It will reduce your heating and cooling bills and prevent fading of your carpet and furniture caused by intense sunlight saving more than your investment in one or 2 years.

Switching from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs will cost you a little more when you first buy the bulbs, but you will save on electricity and you will replace the bulbs far less frequently.

Adding storm doors and windows will save on both heating and cooling costs by reducing the amount of conditioned air that is lost and reducing the amount of outside air that sneaks in. If your budget is tight, you can try doing what our grandfathers did when they wanted storm windows make you own storm windows. You just need a little lumber, a few nails and some heavy plastic.

If you are replacing appliances, it is worth it to insist on energy-efficient models and options, such as vent-free moisture sensing dryers, front loading washers, and refrigerators with through-the-door ice and water. If you are replacing a water heater, an attic fan or a heating/cooling system, you can certainly buy replacements that are more energy-efficient. You might replace your water heater with either instant water heaters or a solar water heater; replace an electric attic fan with a solar-powered fan. Replace your heating and cooling equipment with a single, energy-efficient heat pump. To really save, try choosing a programmable zoned system with timers that allow you to control the temperature in various parts of the house according to your familys needs. Replacing a toilet? Choose a dual-flush toilet to save water usage.

When it is time to replace your roof, choose a metal roof for your replacement. Metal roofs are less expensive and very energy-efficient. If you dont want a metal roof, you can always install attic foil to prevent heat loss.

All of these options are great choices, both for the environment and for your family. But dont forget to look for possible rebates and tax breaks.

Many utility companies offer rebates to customers who install energy-efficient appliances and lights. Just give your utility company a call and ask. Then be sure you understand the standards to qualify for the rebates.

If you install a whole-house voltage surge suppressor or disaster-proof features, be sure to check with your insurance company to see if you will be entitled to any reduction in your insurance rates.

Investigate energy-efficient financing for your upgrades if you are making your home more energy-efficient. Check on FHA Energy-Efficient Mortgages, FHA Section 203(k) Rehabilitation Mortgage Insurance, etc.

And dont forget the opportunities to save on your taxes.

If you will use a remodeled or added room as a home office, be sure to deduct the appropriate percentage of utilities, etc. each year as a business expense.

Get to know the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005. It allows homeowners to take tax credits for remodeling that improves the energy efficiency of your primary residence. The maximum credit you can take is $500, but you can take credits for:

10% of cost up to $500 for energy-efficient exterior door or storm doors

10% of cost up to $500 for a qualified metal roof

10% of cost up to $500 for adding insulation expected to last at least 5 years

$300 for qualified central air conditioning, heat pumps or geothermal heat pumps

up to $150 for a qualified gas, oil or propane furnace or hot water boiler

up to $300 for a qualified gas, oil, propane or electric heat pump water heater

up to $2,000 for solar water heating

Making your home more energy-efficient can be good for the environment, good for your family (and your wallet), and good for the resale value of your home. Do your research and shop carefully when you are making upgrades in your home. Going green will usually pay for itself within 5 to 10 years in reduced energy bills.

Welding Arc Flash and Its Affects

When you are working with a welder there is always the potential for Arc Flash. Anything that you do that works with electricity can do this and it can be a deadly process. Arc flash can happen on a large or small scale, and depending on the welder's safety precautions, it can cause severe burns or be deadly.

An Arc flash happens when there is a fault somewhere in an area where the welder is working. A quick and sudden amount of light energy and heat are released and if the welder is standing in the way, they can receive intense burns or the arc flash can be fatal.

This flash can also destroy equipment, cause eye problems and hurt people within a large radius from where it happened. In order to understand what this may look like, think about a large bolt of lightening that comes down and hits something on the prairie. This arc of light could explode the material that it hits upon and cause a lot of damage to that material.

This is basically what happens in an arc flash. This does not have to happen on a large scale only because you can also suffer from it when you are not using the correct safety equipment when you are welding.

The welder will expose themselves to UV rays that can hurt the surface of your cornea. Sometimes you don't know that this has happened until your eyes begin to feel warm. You may not know it until the next day when you have pain in the eyes. This pain can feel as though you have fractured glass in your eyes.

When you are doing welding it is very important to use a welding lens shade that is at least a number 5 and should be worn within 20 feet of the welding that is being done. If you are standing within 10 feet then you should use a number 9 lens.

Normal arc flashes can also expose you to fumes and toxic gases so it is crucial to your survival to make sure you are in an area that is well ventilated when you are doing your work.

It is equally important to make sure that your equipment is functioning properly because often an arc flash is cased by faulty equipment. You will need to check enclosed systems also because these can cause a problem because some electrical equipment can become energized when it is faulty.

There are a variety of products that can help you resolve issues of arc flash as long as the equipment is working properly, but they only work if the welder will use them. You can get specially insulated gloves, rubber roll blankets (that allow you to isolate the area that you are working within) and carbonX clothing for protection.

Although arc flash can be deadly when it happens, knowing the safety precautions needed can help you get out of the way and be safer. It is wise to know the consequences of arc flash and how to prevent it as much as possible.

The Pros and Cons of Using Solar Power

Proponents of solar power would say that it is the way to fuel the future. Cynics tend to find reasons why solar power will not work. The truth is that there is some validity to both sides. There are both advantages and disadvantages of using solar power.

One reason solar power is so convenient is that there is not any requirement to find any source of fuel beyond the light of the sun. This means that no excavation or pumping is required to access the energy source, as in fossil fuels. Since the sunlight is readily available every day at least to some degree, it is easy to make use of its energy.

For every solar power system that is used, pollution is cut down that much more. Solar power is clean and puts off no harmful emissions into the atmosphere. It causes no pollution of the water supply and no fouling of the soil. There is simply no energy source that causes less damage to the earth.

Solar power systems can be expected to last a long time. They are tough-wearing and sturdy. They have to be built to last so that owners can recoup their investments. It turns out that solar power systems last much longer than that.

The reliability factor is important for any power source. Solar energy passes the test of dependability with flying colors. With a proper system, solar energy can keep a house off the utility power grid completely with a consistent power supply.

The costs for maintaining a solar power system are very low. Some components of the system may last decades without any maintenance at all. Solar panels are often warranted to maintain 80% of their efficiency for up to 25 years. Other parts will need to be replaced sooner, but if all goes well there should be no maintenance costs at all for the first five years.

A solar power system is neither too dangerous nor too complicated for most people to run. It requires no supervision from the government or any other agency because it poses no risks. The cost of running the systems is also very low.

There are certainly a few negative aspects of using solar power. Before consumers can have any solar power, they have to invest thousands of dollars. In five to ten years, they will make up the cost by saving on electrical bills. However, if people do not have the capital to make the initial outlay of cash, it is easier to get their electricity through their local utility company.

The other main reason that solar power is not ideal is that it doesn't perform well on cloudy days or at all at night. Since most people still need power during these times, they have two choices. They can hook up to the power grid and get part of their energy from the utility company, or they can use battery storage. Both ways cost additional money.

In the end, the advantages of solar power far outweigh the disadvantages. It seems that the main sticking point is price. Yet, as green technology comes down in price, this kind of energy becomes even more desirable.

Using Quality Materials to Build Kit Homes

Kit homes are growing in popularity as more and more prospective home owners realize the efficiency and simplicity of this type of building process. The materials used to build kit homes are based upon local council building requirements. As such, the materials used in kit homes are often state of the art materials on the cutting edge of fireproofing technology as well as wind resistance technology. Ultimately the choice is yours, but choosing a kit home made with quality materials makes great sense. It is the more cost effective way to maximize your benefits and ensure quality in every step of the home building process.

Choosing a Builder and Materials

When you choose a builder that has kit building as their area of expertise it will determine the quality of your home. All builders do not give the same concern to quality materials. Choosing a builder with a solid reputation can save you time, money and heart ache. You choose the correct builder and they will in turn show you how to choose the proper high quality materials you need to make your home building dream a reality.

Just as all builders are not created equal neither are all building materials made the same. Specific building materials that may be suitable for use in one area of the country may be completely unsuitable in another region. If you live in an area that is prone to bush fires for example, the material needed to build your home to the highest level of safety would not be the same materials needed for building in a flood plain.

Choosing a Design

The design style you choose when selecting your kit home will also play a large factor in determining the types of materials needed to build that home. Each kit home has predetermined specifications that cannot be altered structurally. However there is much room for negotiation in many aspects of home building, and you should feel welcome and involved every step of the way.

For example, you are naturally involved in choosing the colours for your homes walls, both interior and exterior. You may choose to let the builder select your light fixtures or you may prefer to select them yourself. Those decisions will be based on how involved you want to be. Talk to your builder, they want to please you.

Showing your Style

One has a multitude of choices in building material. The motivation behind choosing particular options should begin with safety, but it can extend to reflect your personal taste and end up as a display of your style. Once the initial building materials and design have been chosen for your kit home, you can then begin to accessorize. If you want to be involved in choosing your shutters or your water faucets just let your builder know in the beginning. You can hammer out an arrangement that suits both your budget and sense of style.

You can rest assured that in step one, if you choose a high quality kit home builder of sound reputation, it means you can trust that builder to guide you through the myriad of choices in safety and aesthetics as you build your dream home.

Vertical Wind Generators

With the rising price of fuel oil, and the rising costs of energy in general, there is increasing demand for home generated power, be it from solar-electric, solar thermal heating, or wind generated power. Of those three options, wind generated power is by far and away the most mature option, with the best odds for getting a reasonable payback in a typical home owning time frame.

With wind power generators, there are two general types to consider: Horizontal blade generators, and vertical wind generators. Horizontal generators are the type most people associate with a windmill or wind generator - they have blades that rotate perpendicular to the ground, with the axis of rotation being horizontal. They have significant advantages in efficiency, but work best when put on a tower, where they can catch the upper contrail winds, and they're more mechanically complex. On top of this, they're also a hazard to birds, and can be quite noisy.

For rural applications, horizontal generators reign supreme. When attached to someone's home for net metered power generation, they run afoul of local zoning ordinances and home owners associations, because, bluntly, there's no real way to make a 35 tall wind turbine look like it's part of a Victorian deco home plot. Couple this with dead birds, loud noises, and people afraid they'll blow over in a storm, and there's a lot of barriers to installation.

The best choice for a homeowner is a vertical wind generator, which rotates on a vertical axis. There are drawbacks - they're about half as efficient as the more traditional wind turbine, and they may need a small "boost" from an electric motor to get their initial rotation going; their minimum threshold for usable wind is a bit lower.

On the other hand, vertical wind generators have the advantage of being suitable for a ground level installation. They can be put out in the middle of the back yard, or on top of the roof of your garage. They're much quieter in general than horizontal generators, and because they operate at a lower altitude, they're less likely to kill birds. They also don't need a yaw element (the "tail" of a conventional turbine blade) to steer them into the wind direction, as they can generate energy from any wind direction the breeze is blowing in from.

Another benefit of vertical wind generators is the range of vendors supplying them; horizontal generators are good for industrial applications, but they're often $12,000 or more to install. Vertical wind generators are often under $5,000. With most electrical prices set the way they are, a vertical wind generator can pay for itself in home use in around 20 to 25 years. (A horizontal generator will be more efficient, and generate power at a lower baseline wind speed, making its higher up front cost make more sense).

Vertical wind generators are also (generally) more aesthetic. They're less likely to be noticed as being an odd addition than a 36' tall tower would be. Some of the more aerodynamic ones tend to look like short rotating sculptures, and there are even bladeless or rotorless turbines.

The most common type of home deployed vertical wind generator is the Savonius type, which uses airfoils and wide variable pitch blades to generate power. Built more or less like large anemometers, they run into problems with generated drag; more efficient ones use variable formations on the blade to minimize drag when they're being swing through the incoming breeze.

The other type of wind generator is the so-called 'egg beater' windmill - they can scale up to the full industrial size installation, though they're also suitable for small home installations. They're much more efficient, but also noisier, and a bit more effort is required to maintain them.

Depending on where you're setting your vertical wind generator up, your local utility company may offer credits for doing so, and nearly 90% of the utility companies in the US offer some form of net metering, where excess electricity you produce from your vertical wind generator is sold back to them and credited against your bill. Look seriously into the options your utility company provides before investing in a vertical wind generator, and consider it an investment in cheaper power down the road.

Option of Built in Or Stand-Free

When you have made up your mind to redecorate your bathroom the most important thing you have to consider is what kind of bathroom vanity are you going to use. After considering all the choices available decide on the one that is suited to your style of bathroom and your taste. You will find two types of bathroom vanities and they are either the fixed kind or freestanding.

The built in kind is one that stands against the wall and has a solid counter top and looks a part of the bathroom structure. If you are looking to give your bathroom a modern look then the option of free-standing vanity is ideal. There is a wide variety of contemporary designs available which are unique and suitable for people who want a more sleek look. One advantage is that you get visual space if you go for free standing ones.

The most commonly used bathroom vanity top comes in marble, ceramic, or granite. The sink and the top are combined into one unit which is the most common of all styles. You also find vanity tops that come with a cut-out so that you can fix a sink according to your choice. Some manufacturers offer custom made tops at reasonable prices This gives you the freedom to place the sink where you want besides the shape of the bowl.

If you decide that you want to do it yourself then you would have to consider the hassle of connecting the supply lines and the drain, etc. Although the modern sink and faucet are easy to install oneself but still connecting to the exact supply points could be a difficult part.. In fact you can face a problem while fixing because the base of the vanity cannot be moved in order to reach the water lines and you might find yourself not able to move so easily even for tightening a nut.

Before you go to make purchases for your bathroom vanity it is important that you take the time out to look around all the stores in your area that sell bathroom accessories to know exactly what common options are available. If you are not satisfied by what the stores have then you you can check online to look for more variety of styles. But if you have already purchased then you would be stuck unless you decide to spend some extra for something more. So it is better to be careful how and where you choose from when you want to buy bathroom vanity.

The Beauty of Cedar Deck Railing

The Importance of Good Railings For Your Home

Stair railings are a necessary component of stairs that lead either to the upper or lower level of your home. This is the legal description of stair railings. They are, however, more than just that in your home. They offer protection from family members and guests accidentally falling off the stairs as well as being very complimentary to the overall dcor of your home. Cedar deck railing is very popular for outdoor decks while wood or vinyls are both used inside the home.

If you're building or remodeling your home, you'll be amazed when you see the many different designs, styles and materials there are available for railings for deck stairs and staircases inside the home. The style you choose will depend on your personal taste and preference. There are simple and plain designs for a casual or country design, while artistic and elegant designs can be used for a real touch of style and class. Long staircases have always been popular in homes and continue to be popular. With the ever-popular decks being built all the time, you'll want to take the time to decide which style of railing you want on your deck. Although a little more costly than most woods, cedar deck railing always looks great, especially with proper treatment. The most important thing when choosing deck railing is to use a material that can withstand the elements of weather, which can be very hard on certain materials.

Building Safe Railings

Besides as home dcor, the main reason for stair railings is to prevent people from falling off the stairs and injuring themselves. Make sure the handrail and baluster are both sturdy enough to withstand the amount of weight that they'll encounter. Another safety factor is the space between the balusters, which should not be more than 4 inches. Certain laws are in effect regarding stairways and railings. Any size larger than 4 inches may cause a problem with a small child slipping through or being stuck and being injured.

Materials For Stair Railings

Many different materials can be used for building your stair railings including wood, vinyl, composites and metal. Aluminum railings can have different finishes such as powder coated, brushed silky look or brightly polished. They all look great and are a matter of personal preference. Wrought iron, brass, bronze or cast iron are all used to make metallic railings, which are also popular. Many people choose to mix and match materials. For instance, they'll use wood on the floor and vinyl cap rails on cedar deck railings. The most important thing to remember is to use the materials that will last the longest and withstand the most perils like weather, rotting or insects.

Go Green With Your Home Based Business Office

Taking care of the environment is everyone's responsibility--including home based business owners. Don't use the excuse that you are a small business owner so you can't afford to be green. There are a number of ways that you can show your concern for the environment.

Energy consumption is one of the major ways that the environment is damaged. It is also one of the easiest things to cut. Most people think about actual appliances like air conditioners but few people think about office equipment and the appliance inside of them. However it is these forgotten office equipment pieces that suck up unnecessary energy.

As the country tries to move towards more energy saving procedure there are a few easy steps you can take to do your part. A great number of businesses are starting to use equipment that is ENERGY STAR qualified. These pieces are more efficient because office equipment can draw a great amount of energy that is does not need. If you can not afford to upgrade right now, when you get replacement printers, computers, monitors or copies, you should try to buy ENREGY STAR products.

There are other small steps you can take to save energy in your office. One of them is simply turning off the equipment at night. If your computer has power management software take the time to activate it. Also print on both sides of the paper whenever necessary.

Recycling is a must. Shred important documents are recycle the shreds. Also make sure that you recycle electronic equipment such as printer parts and take computer parts to the appropriate places to have them disposed of.

If you have small appliances like a refrigerator in your home office, go for ENERGY STAR products. Also make sure that the door is closed whenever you are not in it. Be on the lookout for any cracks in the door seals.

E-mail as much as you can. Although some things have to be sent through snail mail, most things, these days, can be e-mailed. Take advantage of this and save a good amount of trees in the meantime. Business cards are nice but have as many people as possible visit your website instead.

Invest in compact fluorescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are inefficient and use so much more power than fluorescent ones. Reduce the air conditioning usage by keeping the blinds or curtains pulled on hot days. The air conditioning may still kick on but it won't stay on as long.

When you are not using your computer leave it in sleep mode. Only turn the computer off when you are done with it for the day. Computer use more energy to reboot than they do when they are in the hibernation mode. At the end of the day turn off the computer and unplug it to save energy.

Once you have your home based business office set up you should get an office energy audit. This will help you figure out where you are wasting energy and how you can save more. Remember the more energy you save, the more money you save.
